Sadly, the time has come to sell my 1999 328i.
Factory Options:
Car was very well optioned ? I believe the only thing missing was nav (although it does have an original Nav system, just not the one you normally see?)
5 Speed Manual
Sport Package
Xenons
Power Seats w/driver side memory (tan vinyl)
18? Style 71 Summer Rims
Park Distance Control
Heated Seats
60/40 Split Rear Seats w/ ski pass through
Harmon Kardon Sound System
Fog Lights
I always kept up on maintenance and have replaced/repaired when needed (see below for details on recent repairs).
Car has 207k miles and counting. ? I put on about 108k of those miles. Long daily commute. The rear subframe was cracked and the work was done by BMW — it has an entirely new subframe that was installed by Tulley BMW. I see this as a HUGE advantage over cars that are still on the original subframe that is prone to failure.
Motor – Runs great, doesn?t burn any oil. I have always changed the oil at 7500 mile intervals (half of the suggested interval) and used Mann filters and BMW oil. I have all receipts since I purchased the car. Always filled with premium, and I range 27.5-29.5 mpg.
Work done to the engine/engine area in the last 20k (outside of oil changes):
Radiator, electric fan, and upper and lower houses replaced 10k miles ago (waterpump and expansion tank were done 35k ago)
Plugs replaced 15k ago
All 4 O2 Sensors replaced 20k ago
Recent fuel filter, belts, tensioners, etc
Much more work was done earlier, PCV system (upgraded to cold climate version) at 40k ago, intake boots, etc.
Transmission/Clutch ? Strong clutch, which I believe to be the original, unless it was changed in the first 99k. Still very strong with absolutely no signs of slippage. I do not abuse the car and think spinning the tires and hard starts are a waste of money. Transmission and rear end do not make any noise, both seem fine. Trans and Diff oil were last changed 15k ago with redline fluids in both. Regularly changed at about 30k intervals.
Body ? Orient Blue paint still shines very nicely. Washed regularly. Door dings, no dents bigger than a door ding. The car still looks very sharp, and I still get regular compliments on it. People are truly amazed when they hear the year and mileage. However; there are a couple of spots where some rust is starting to bubble up under the paint. Small, for now, but certainly should be addressed soon before the paint breaks and it continues to spread.
Interior ? Tan vinyl sports interior. BMW winter mats included. Very Clean. Cleaned regularly?I am super anal about the interior of my car. Drivers seat cover needs to be replaced; multiple cracks, split seam, etc. I would recommend replacing the cushions as well (although its not uncomfortable). Driver?s side seat heater is finicky and should be replaced when you do the seat cover. All other seats are fine.
Suspension ? Bilstein Sport struts at all 4 corners (lifetime warranty..!). Rear diff mount replaced 26k ago. All shock mounts replaced (Meyle HD in back, BMW in front). All balljoints done 26k ago (Meyle HD). Swaybar links 15k ago. RTABS and FCABS done somewhat recently too.
Random other things/add-ons:
Separate set of 17? winter wheels w/ Nokian Hakka?s in great shape (currently mounted). Weighted ZHP shift knob
Factory Nav (although it is the much smaller ?radio nav? that you don?t know about ; http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr…174&highlight=).
Rubber BMW winter mats
DICE Unit wired up and into front armrest
CCFL Angel eyes wired into the dome light
Things it needs:
Parking brake should be adjusted (cable was replaced when subframe was done, still needs to be adjusted)
Aforementioned rust that is starting to bubble up
Minor leak from oil filter housing gasket. I have the gasket, but have not gotten around to installing it yet. No noticeable amount of oil leaks out (according to the dipstick), but it does make the bottom of the motor damp.
Desperately needs summer tires. Winter tires are mounted, but summers need to be done. 18? summer wheels (style ) included. I have been running staggered, but you can save some money and run the same size all around. Or buy 17?s and sell these desirable 18?s. At least two of the summer rims have bends that should probably be straightened. I had a slight shake in the steering wheel at 75 the last two years as a result. Not bad, but it should be done. The lips of the wheels could also be refinished.
There is a squeak in the front end that I am having diagnosed by 3D Auto tonight. I plan on taking care of this, but depending on what it is this can be used as a point of negotiation if you?d like. I DIY most of the work myself and have 3D do what I don?t have time for/can?t handle.
Asking $4000. Price is firm for now. I do not need to sell the car, so I can afford to be firm. Clean title in hand.
Pic is from when I bought it back in 2007, but it really looks the same. I will get more updated photos over the next day or so. Let me know if you want a photo of anything in particular.
Sad to see it go, but my commute is long and it just makes sense for me to get into a TDI or Hybrid?which is what I?ll buy when this sells.
